Project Hail Mary: Movie Day/Night, Sermon, and Avoiding Spoilers

June 14, I'll be preaching on the movie/book, "Project Hail Mary." How to avoid spoilers.

I referenced the subject of a society's system of manners and politeness a couple of weeks ago, and here's an interesting thing: a sense of what is polite is ever-evolving. One example is how we, as a society, have collectively decided on the matter of "spoilers."

Spoilers is the term for revealing something significant about a book, movie, or series that is meant to be a surprise when you watch it for the first time. On social media, to avoiding "spoiling" a show, a person will often write "Spoilers Ahead: (name of movie/show/book)." Then they'll put in several blank lines before sharing some insight on the plot point.

There are no spoilers in this post.

But there will be in my sermon on June 14.

One of the items auctioned off in this year's fundraiser was the chance to decide on a sermon topic I will deliver. The Bercu family won and decided the topic would be a movie (based on a book) that came out this year, Project Hail Mary.

After seeing it this week, I'll tell you, I could easily preach a month on the different topics and questions the movie brings up. (But I won't.) The topic I have chosen does, however, require me to delve into a massive spoiler.

Project Hail Mary is still showing in theaters; it is also available for streaming on Amazon Prime for $20. But it will also be shown at Live Oak, the week before the sermon. Mark your calendar: we'll be showing it in our sanctuary on Wednesday, June 10, at 10:30 am and again Thursday evening, June 11, at 6:00 pm. There will be time after each for some casual discussion.

I'll add this: I think some folks may not be interested because they think this is a sci-fi movie, since it's set in outer space. I would argue that it's less sci-fi, and more about philosophy, ethics, religion, and morality. It'll make you think - a lot!
