All the Things at Live Oak – Bring a Friend!

One of the most surprising things to me since I began creating TikTok videos introducing people to Unitarian Universalism was how many people are completely intimidated at the idea of walking into a church.

I mean, I knew there were some … but over and over, I receive comments that say, “I would LOVE to go to a UU church, but I feel so anxious about walking into a new place.”

Many struggle with social anxiety. Others have been a part of a rigid, fundamentalist church, and it has left some scars. What I always say is for them to call or email the minister (or someone else at the church) and ask if they can get a tour earlier in the week, or just meet the minister.

You know what … there might be someone you know who would love to visit Live Oak, but they also feel anxiety. And you know what ratchets that anxiety down? Going with a member!

December is a wonderful time to visit a church for the first time. We tend to have a higher amount of visitors, plus there are multiple events outside of the Sunday service. Maybe you have a friend who would be interested in Selfies with Santa or one of the Labyrinth walks. Or maybe you have a neighbor who you know is going through a rough time. You could invite them to be your guest at the Blue Christmas vespers service.

That phrase, “be my guest” — it is powerful! I know, because a month ago, I was invited to an event by an acquaintance. Truth be told, I probably would have said no, but she phrased it as, “I wanted to see if you were interested in being my guest at (this event)…” Well, that makes it sound far more personal … and more special. I said yes, and I’m glad I did.

If you’re on Facebook, you can share the “Holidays at Live Oak” graphic that is on our church Facebook page. (Beautifully designed by Jennifer Rose Hale.) Or you can send them this link to the titles and explanations of our events: https://www.liveoakuu.org/holidays2022/

And hey, the invitation goes to you, too! Maybe you’ve gotten out of the habit of coming to church. I sure look forward to seeing you, and exchanging some holiday cheer!
