The most radical thing we can do is to introduce people to each other. You might have seen that sentiment on my car’s back bumper. Chalice Circles provide a way to introduce ourselves to each other in a deeply satisfying way. Chalice Circles consist of informally structured conversation evolving from a topic presented by a facilitator. Through the stories we tell and the connections we form, we have the power to bless and transform this world, beginning with each other. Small Group Ministry has been growing in UU congregations since the 1990s. I have witnessed its transformative power in individuals and in congregations. For more information about Chalice Circles, or to sign up, please contact Rev. Kathleen Ellis (kellis@uuma.org). Choir!! Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 7:30. The choir is on break during the summer and will start rehearsing again in late August. Anyone who would like to join is advised to contact Rebecca Maze at (rmaze@austin.rr.com) or 266-2246. Bird and Bell Meditation Society gathers weekly on Monday evenings from 7 to 8 PM at the home of Lyn and Gaines Whitcomb, 1707 Old Mill Road, Cedar Park (about a mile from the Live Oak church). We visit some, chant for about five minutes, then sit in silent meditation for half an hour. We also meet for a monthly "Saturday Long Sit" - a two hour intensive from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, at the Whitcombs' - mostly on the second Saturday. At the Long Sit we visit, chant, and sit as at weekly meetings; then we do walking meditation in the "woods" out back. This format repeats for each hour, so you should come at about 9:25 or 10:25, if you can't attend the entire morning. Afterward we often go out to lunch. We're very informal and eclectic, and newcomers are encouraged to join us for either weekly or Saturday meditations. It really is an ideal setting for meditation practice. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our group and practice style: Gaines Whitcomb, 506-8621, deuxfleurs@sbcglobal.net Please take a look at e-mail meditation reminders, as there's always possibility of a change. Recovery Groups - PFLAG Meeting - Did you know that approximately one in four families has an immediate family member who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender and most people have at least one gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender member in their extended circle of friends and family? One of the great things about PFLAG is that each of our members has gone through a unique but, as you may find, a similar experience. In fact, someone in our chapter most likely has been through much of what you are now feeling or felt when you first learned that your loved one is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. There are plenty of people that can talk to you and are willing to share their experience as well as provide you with support. Join us at any of our meetings on the second Tuesday of each month in the Fellowship Hall from 7:00-9:00 pm. You are also welcome to borrow books and videos from PFLAG’s bookcase located in Live Oak’s library. Please refer to our website (www.pflag-austin.org) or contact Dennis (dennisdgreen@mac.com). Soul Talk - "A Spiritual Feast to Leaven the World Soul": Our minister Chuck Freeman's radio show from 2-3 pm. CST on Thursdays. Fresh Off the Grill, KOOP, 91.7 FM Austin, TX, streaming on the web, www.koop.org. Chuck founded a non - profit, The "Free Souls Project" in October of 2006 to be the funding arm of Soul Talk Radio and other media ventures. The Soul-casts (podcasts) are on the Free Souls site - www.freesoulsproject.org. You can subscribe to get the weekly show offerings and even donate to our cause! Steering Committee - Our church is governed by Steering Committee. We have adopted shared leadership in which decision- making power is vested in every member of the church. This means that while we have officers and trustees who are expected to attend all Steering Committee meetings, all meetings are open and we encourage any interested member to participate. Decisions are made by a consensus of those members who attend. Meetings are held (usually) on the second Sunday of the month in the Fellowship Hall. We begin at 1:00 pm. This month’s meeting will be on October 14. A call for agenda items will occur during the week before over the email list. Childcare is available; RSVP instructions for childcare will be also forthcoming on the Live Oak UU email list. Come join us in building our church together!
