Art Gallery Report

 The Photographer’s Journey – the current art gallery exhibit – has been a huge success! As a team, we learned so much about how to manage an art gallery and how art can unite strangers into a community. The Photographer’s Journey will run through November. Most of the photos are available for purchase; see the information cards for details. A portion of the proceeds from sales benefit the church. Thanks to all the photographers for their unique and wonderful contributions!

The Photographer’s Journey Opens

The first show in our new Art Gallery will open on September 10. Snacks and drinks will be served from 6:30-7:30 pm, with the official Grand Opening scheduled from 7:10-7:25. That will be followed at 7:30 by a showing of Torch Song Trilogy, part of the Welcoming Congregation workshops, which will in turn be followed at 9:30 pm by a discussion of the film.

The pictures are to be hung on September 7, starting at 6:30 pm. Exhibitors need to be there at that time with their work. Should an exhibitor have a conflict, please contact one of the Art Gallery team listed below.

If you have not yet submitted a picture for the exhibit, there is still time. The work needs to be professionally presented (framed or mounted) and must be appropriate for all ages. Please contact anyone on the Art Gallery Team: John Phelps (johnphelps@austin.rr.com, 733-0561), Nisa Sharma (zoikesmom@sbcglobal.net), or Karen Mustard (loserparents@austin.rr.com).

August 2005

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that an update to the Photographer's Journey announcement is on its way.  As you can see by the number on the To: line, we have had lots of people express interest in displaying their work at the show.  It's going to be an exciting event!

News

bulletWe have received the clips that were ordered to hang the photographs.  They are marvelous little devices that are quite secure and unobtrusive.  They also won't tear up the walls.  Great design!  The church will supply these at no cost.
bulletWe are planning a gala celebration on Saturday, September 10 to open the show.  It's being planned in concert with the Live Oak cinema club which will have a special movie showing that evening.  More details will be coming as we get closer to the date.
bulletWe will be hanging the photographs on a weekday evening during the week of September 5.  That's Labor Day week.  We will get an announcement out to everyone on when to bring their photographs.
bulletMany of you have already sent in your photographs for review and they look great!  For those of you who haven't, please e-mail them to one of the other members of the Art Gallery Team.  We need to be sure that they are appropriate for all ages.  If you can't get them into an e-mail message, please plan on bringing them to the church on Sunday, August 21 so we can approve them.

Framing supplies
Framing your work always seems to cost more than it should and take more energy than you want to invest.  But it's really essential to make your work look its best.  We have found excellent framing supplies in the greater Austin area.  Places to check out:

Aaron Bros. - they have a huge selection of reasonably priced frames at La Frontera in Round Rock.
Garden Ridge - they have an excellent selection of very inexpensive frames including many with mats.  You just need to get past all the scented candles and faux flowers.

Large format printers
If you have digital images and want to display a really BIG enlargement, check out http://www.jumbogiant.com/.  They make 24x36 inch borderless prints for $39.95 that are incredible!  All you do is upload the original JPG file and they upsample it to produce huge enlargements. The turnaround time is excellent as well.  Highly recommended.

FAQ
If you haven't had a chance to read the FAQ document, here is a link to it. http://www.johnphelpsphoto.com/Art%20Gallery%20FAQ%20072305.pdf

Thanks to everyone for your interest in The Photographer's Journey and your support.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Call for Submissions! (this was what got the art to show up!)

The Live Oak Art Gallery announces its first show: The Photographer's Journey.

The Photographer's Journey will run from Saturday, September 10, through December 10, 2005. The theme can be taken either literally with travel photographs, or symbolically with work representing our inner journeys.

The Art Gallery Team is actively looking for photographers who are interested in participating. A Call for Submissions has been sent out via email. A FAQ document is also available with detailed information about the art gallery policies and procedures. (The FAQ is available here.)

The photographs to be included in the show need to be professionally presented – framed or mounted – and need to be suitable for all audiences.

A simple process has been established for reviewing and approving photographs to be included in the show. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, August 21

For more information, contact one of the members of the Art Gallery Team:

*             John Phelps, 733-0561, johnphelps@austin.rr.com

*             Nisa Sharma, 335-5771, zoikesmom@sbcglobal.net

*             Karen Mustard, loserparents@austin.rr.com

The Art Gallery is sponsored by the Aesthetics Committee at Live Oak. We have several objectives, including:

*       Provide inspiration and beauty to all who enter our space

*       Help grow the Live Oak community by offering a new covenant group focused on artistic expression

*       Provide artists with an opportunity to share their work and sell it if they so choose. A percentage of the sales would go to the church as a donation

*       Decorate the church, especially the Fellowship Hall

If you are interested in helping plan the Art Gallery, displaying your work, or any other part of this new project, please contact the Art Gallery Team.
