Not so long ago, sentient AI was the subject of science fiction and fantasy novels. Nowadays, sentient AI is being predicted for the not-so-distant future. Should sentience occur, what is our responsibility towards AI as Unitarian Universalists? This sermon explores some of the theological questions that arise concerning the future of AI.
Nancy Mohn Barnard grew up in the United Church of Christ but found her way to the Unitarian Universalist church in 2007, when she became a member of First UU Church of Austin. In 2018, she joined Swan Songs, a local non-profit that provides musical last wishes for the terminally ill. Inspired by her work with the hospice population, Barnard decided to attend seminary, in order to become a chaplain. She earned a Masters of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in May 2024, and will begin a chaplaincy residency at Seton Ascension in September. Barnard is a candidate for ordination with the UUA.
