News Updates on SWUUW 2003 Conference Planning

This is a collection of monthly updates, in reverse order. We hope you enjoy reading about our plans and will join us to see them come to their fruition.

April 2003

WOMEN'S CONFERENCE A GREAT SUCCESS!

Thanks to ALL who participated in the 2003 SWUUW Conference--from the organizers to the attendees to the vendors to the hotel staff! We were pleasantly surprised at how well the entire event went, and as far as we can tell, we still all like each other!

The conference opened with a beautiful, moving opening ritual and closed with an equally impressive event. The maidens, mothers and crones brought tears to many an eye, and the drumming was a lovely accompaniment.

The workshop day started out with Nancy Franklin's talk about becoming wonder women--we all know now that we need 18 hugs a day for optimal happiness--so everyone start hugging! The workshop sessions were all very well attended--especially the movement sessions--whew there were a lot of happy, moving women! When not attending workshops, walking the labyrinth or bonding with our friends, women shopped and shopped at the fabulous assortment of vendors. It was great fun watching wonder women trying on shining dresses, scarves, and jewelry that accentuated their smiles.

The Saturday banquet was delicious, and each attendee received a surprise pin with the logo of the conference on it, a gift from the conference committee. After recognizing our maiden attendees (the most maidens at a SWUUW conference ever!) we rocked to the Therapy Sisters, who entertained us with a mix of satire, serious songs and music to dance to. It was obvious that they had as much fun as the audience did! Those with even more energy continued by drumming into the evening.

Everyone was sad to see the conference end on Sunday morning--many attended local church services to cap off their experience.

The conference planners were thrilled to present the women of our District with a conference, and are grateful to have sold so much merchandise with our lovely logo on it, too. Janet and Sue Ann would like to thank all the conference planning team and everyone who pitched in during the conference from the bottom of our hearts--this was truly a group effort and the success is a credit to the women of Live Oak, First UU and Wildflower who helped us. We love you all.

February 2003

THE 2003 SWUUW CONFERENCE! IT'S ALMOST HERE!

WE'RE HOLDING A WOMEN'S CONFERENCE AND IT'S GONNA BE A DOOZY!

Things are coming together just wonderfully for the 2003 Southwest UU Women's Conference, which will be so very soon: February 28-March 2 at the Renaissance Arboretum hotel!

Our intrepid group of volunteers are doing a wonderful job of keeping track of all our to do items, and the plan is coming together! The rooms are going to be beautiful, the workshops varied and fascinating, and the rituals incredible.

If YOU have not turned in your registration, now is the time! There are forms in the back of the sanctuary, or you can get one online at www.liveoakuu.org/swuuw.htm.  Registrations are coming in at a nice rate, so we hope to have many, many women to have fun with, from all over the District.

Our fundraising concert in January was a lot of fun, and raised over $300 toward special projects for the conference—wait until you see what this means! A nice surprise for all. We really appreciate the volunteer efforts of the performers, the set-up and tear-down crew and those of you who braved the rain and cold to come out for some fine traditional and folk-rock music. If you have any questions or would like to help out in any way, please let us know. There are lots of small projects and ways you can help during the conference. Sue Ann Kendall webmaster@liveoakuu.org  Janet Van Sickler janet@objectwatch.com

YOU CAN HELP!

Wanting to support the SWUUW Conference but don't know how??? Well, here are two ways!

Susan Steffes is holding a workshop during the conference, leading women in making empowerment necklaces, and she could use your donation of beads (with at least a medium size hole), small shells (preferably with holes), seed pods, nuts, feathers, old jewelry pieces that might be broken or missing parts (such as that one earring you can't find the mate for), and lastly, mini-glue sticks and mini glue guns (if you have one to loan she'll return them to you). Donations can be left in the 1st–2nd grade RE classroom in the box labeled 'SWUUW Workshop Donations'. Susan and the workshop attendees will thank you for adding to their special creations!

Wendy Marks is in need of magazines with pictures for one of the workshops. Please call her at 335-0250 and she will collect any and all donations.

DRINK A HOT BEVERAGE AND MAKE A STATEMENT

Live Oak's SWUUW Conference planning team has created very special mugs that we are selling to raise funds for the Conference Scholarship fund. We will sell these limited edition mugs until they run out—and if that's during or after the Austin Conference, funds will go to the next one! Mugs feature the wise saying “Wisdom Begins with Wonder,” which fits in with the conference theme AND is universal—you could use this mug anywhere with pride, knowing people will think you are deep and intellectual, as well as a connoisseur of fine beverages. The mugs make fine gifts for all your non-UU friends, who need subtle messages featuring our kind of universal truths, too. The mugs are only $8 each, or two for $15, and are available at Live Oak and First UU churches—Mugs will be on sale between and after services—check with any women's conference team member for details!

January 2003

IT'S COMING SOON! THE 2003 SWUUW CONFERENCE! BUT COME TO OUR CONCERT FIRST!!!

Members of Live Oak and the other local UU churches are hard at work rounding up final details for the 2003 SWUUW conference, which is still February 28-March 2, 2003 at the Renaissance Arboretum hotel. The brochures are in the mail and our vendor tables are nearly full (contact Jo Soto for vendor info). If you do not have a brochure, please see if you can download one from the Web site (http://www.liveoakuu.org/swuuw.htm), or feel free to photocopy the one in the church sanctuary--we ran a bit short of printed versions and wow they were expensive to print (but beautiful).

CUPS AND CONCERT

We are going to be holding a special fundraiser to help with some additional expenses we are incurring. Look for beautiful souvenir mugs that we will be selling...where can you get one? We will first offer them at our wonderful concert on SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 2003 at 4:30 pm in the Live Oak sanctuary. Come hear musicians who also happen to be conference committee members (or their friends and family) in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. There will also be baked goods to go with the hot beverage you enjoy in your NEW MUG! The money raised will go to a special conference surprise, so please help us out. Musical entertainment will include:

bulletRebecca Maze, Live Oak UU's musical director and helper with conference music
bulletBrenna Pritchard (maiden conference participant and daughter of committee member!)
bulletTrey Bone (co-convener, spouse of committee member and helpful friend!)
bulletWide Range Drifters (Cowboy and other things music, from First UU)
bulletand surprise guests galore!

YOU CAN HELP!

We have a list of people who are willing to help out with conference projects, and have been calling upon those kind souls as needed, but we will need many more for fun things like decorating the conference space, staffing the registration booth, being friendly greeters at the greeting activity, and staffing the maiden and red tent rooms. Please contact Janet (janet@objectwatch.com) or Sue Ann (webmaster@liveoakuu.org) if you are interested in helping--we are SO excited!!

WHEE!  WOMEN OF WONDER CAN REGISTER SOON! We've got nearly all the details down for the SWUUW Conference we're hosting next year! By the time you get this newsletter, the registration booklet will be drafted, and will soon be in the hands of our talented graphic designer for beautifying. We will have the booklets ready in time for the Fall District Conference, where each church in our District will get copies. All women who are members of the Southwest UU Women group will also receive copies, as will (I think) previous registrants. We will also have the booklet available on the Web.

September 2002

EXCITING WOMEN'S CONFERENCE UPDATE Wow--we really ARE women of wonder! The planning for the 2003 SWUUW Conference (coming this February at the Renaissance Arboretum hotel!) is really coming along WONDER-fully! We are still looking for UU women folk from any of the local congregations with ideas and energy to help us as we get into the really exciting part of deciding the logistics and look of the conference! Please join us for our next meeting, Tuesday, September 10, at 9 am in the church sanctuary.

Here's what we have accomplished this month:

*We finalized the workshops (that means no more space for sessions). There will be 11 "spiritual," 5 "movement," and 7 "crafts" sessions (broadly speaking). Of course, ALL sessions will appeal to our spirituality!

*We have home hospitality arranged--this will allow us to coordinate finding a place in local church members' homes for attendees who can't afford the hotel to stay.

*We have pricing information on our t-shirts and tote bags that we will sell. We will also have embroidered merchandise. They are all going to feature our gorgeous logo in full color, and be very reasonably priced!

*Our vendor team is also in high gear. We will have some really wonderful people at the conference, so start saving your funds NOW.

We will soon add the working list of session topics to the women's conference web pages. You can find them linked at the bottom of the Live Oak home page. Send comments and suggestions to webmaster@liveoakuu.org  or janet@objectwatch.com

August 2002

After a month off, the planning committee for the 2003 SWUUW Conference is back to work. Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 13 at 9am in the church sanctuary. We request that, if you are presenting, you get your information sheet filled out and sent to Janet Van Sickler or myself before the meeting, so we well have all the information ready for the meeting.

We will start working on the program book at this time, and also trying to figure out finances – if you are waiting until the right moment to volunteer and are a financial wizard, now is the time to help out!

We have only half a year until the conference – any and all input is welcome! Questions? Contact me at webmaster@liveoakuu.org or Janet at janet@objectwatch.com. If you can't come to meetings and want to help, never fear, we do a lot of work via our email list, SWUU2003@yahoogroups.com. To subscribe, go to
SWUU2003-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This conference is for all of us, and will be a BLAST! The coolest of women are helping--check us out! Join in the fun!

July 2002:

We are really getting excited about the woman's spirituality conference that we are hosting February 27-March 1 of next year. We have the program tentatively laid out, and have made contact with people from the previous year’s conference, who have given us helpful information. We are working with women from our church, First UU and Wildflower church, and are pleased by our progress.

Due to holiday fun, we aren't holding a meeting in July, but encourage everyone to keep thinking. If you are responsible for one of the sessions, please work on a short description of it to bring to the August meeting, because we are starting work on the registration book--yes, things are
moving along!!

Please join us Tuesday, August 13 at 9:00 am in the church for our next meeting--those of you who have organizational skills and are ready to get assigned your tasks are encouraged to come!

June 2002:

At the next 2003 SWUUW Conference planning meeting, we want to slot in the session topics and speakers we came up with at our last GREAT meeting, where we also formed a ritual subcommittee! Our next planning meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11 at Carolyn Dower's home (contact webmaster@liveoakuu.org for time), which will accommodate our larger numbers. THANKS for everyone's enthusiastic help-we're going to have a great time.

May 2002: Women's Conference Session Ideas Needed

At the next 2003 SWUUW Conference planning meeting, we want to firm up session topics and speakers, as much as possible. We need your input-if you can't come to the meeting, phone or email us, PLEASE. If you don't, we can't guarantee that your wonderful speaker idea can be considered!

Our next planning meeting will be on Tuesday, May 14 at 9:00 a.m., at Kerby Lane Café on 183. Please let Janet know if you plan to attend the meeting so she can reserve an appropriate table.

We are also appreciating those of you who are letting us know that you will be available to help us nearer the end of planning and during the conference-this is valuable as well. But, if you want to see the conference work out a specific way, we need you to help plan now!

April 2002: We're Hosting a Women's Conference and Want Your Help!

Planning is moving right along for the SWUUW District Conference next February! But, we have lots to do and it sure would be more fun with YOUR ideas and input to help us along! So that more of us can have a chance to participate, we have two meetings this month:

Tuesday, April 2, IN THE EVENING at 7:30 PM at the church and Tuesday, April 9, IN THE MORNING at 9:00 AM at the lovely Kerby Lane Café on 183.

Please let Janet know if you plan to attend either meeting ( janet@objectwatch.com ). We will try to provide refreshments for the evening meeting.

We are talking about speakers, vendors and what we need to get moving on. We had hoped to have information about the conference from our predecessors by this month--maybe we will! Join fun people for some fun planning, and EAT!

Sue Ann Kendall and Janet Van Sickler, your co-conveners

March 2002: 2003 SWUUW CONFERENCE PLANS MOVING RIGHT ALONG

We hope all Live Oak women and female friends of Live Oak have already marked their calendars for February 28-March 2 of next year--that's when we will be welcoming the women of our District to their annual conference.

Planning is going on NOW and we are hoping as many of us as possible can help out. Our planning meetings are both fun and delicious--please join us for the next one, on Tuesday, March 5, at 9 am at Kerbey Lane on 183.

Our Wonder Women (that's part of our theme--come to a planning meeting to learn more about it) have made a lot of progress recently--here are some highlights. Last month we signed the contract with the coolest hotel in Austin--the Renaissance Arboretum. We got a huge price break on the rooms (wait until you SEE the rooms!) and the use of some wonderful spaces for sessions, with beautiful views. Our guests will get a great impression of Austin. We've got a beautiful conference logo designed, which we put on handouts for the Ft. Worth conference at the end of February. We wrote and delivered a rousing skit to inspire lots and lots of women to show up to our conference. We have lined up a number of really amazing guest speakers, too. The women of First UU have volunteered to work on a ritual/workshop just for maidens, and we have a multi-church committee working on a truly awesome opening ritual. We are PSYCHED (as they'd say when I was young).

At the next meeting, we are going to work hard on deciding what sessions to hold and get good ideas for speakers. We NEED your suggestions--I know that among the extended Live Oak community, we know some wonderful people.

Please write to me at sak@mallorn.com or Janet van Sickler at janet@objectwatch.com, if you have a suggestion or would like to volunteer your services. Including contact information would really help us out.
