Community Outreach Committee
Through the Community Outreach committee, we find one way of connecting our experiences as UUs to the wider world. People at Live Oak have been living the values of their faith
through their commitment to working for social justice. Over the past few years, the
committee has involved church people in improving a playground at a community nursery
school, volunteering at Hill Country Ministries food pantry, providing companionship and
entertainment to nursing home residents, donating household goods to families at the
Center for Battered Women, walking to raise money for Austin Metropolitan Ministries, and
"adopting" a needy family at Christmas time. The
committee has looked for service opportunities that fulfill three basic criteria: they
hold true to our UU principles; children and young adults can participate; and a high
level of interest and energy exist in the congregation for the particular project. We have
seen an ever-increasing number of people become involved in social action projects and
anticipate that as our church grows, so will our involvement in the wider world.

2006
Watch for our sign up table this month for our
all-generation Community Outreach event. We will work to improve the home of a
deserving family. At our last event, over 100 UUs from all over Austin took
part! All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be special projects for the
kids. We’ll work in two shifts, from 9:00-12:00 am and 1:00-4:00 pm, with lunch
served in between. If you’d like to be in on the conversation and planning, join
our Community Outreach chat at our email list. (Subscribe by sending a blank
