Live @ Live Oak Jazz
Series presents
Rich Harney & Alex Coke
Saturday November
4, 2006 at
8:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church
Soul
Prayers: As pillars of the Austin jazz scene, pianist Rich Harney and
saxophonist/flutist Alex Coke have a long and prolific history together. The
pair lays claim to a set of traditional gospel tunes and inspirational
originals. Harney adheres to the earthy Horace Silver-inspired style upon which
he's built his reputation. Although more restrained than usual, Coke seems very
much at home in this lyrical mode on both sax and flute. He's particularly
impressive on ballads like his original "Psalm 23" and the "St. James
Infirmary"-like "Mumblin' Word." Harney and Coke deliver a ruminative but
uplifting jazz sermon.

The Pete Rodriguez Quintet
With Adam
Booker-bass, Angelo Stokes-drums, Anthony Belfiglio-piano, Elias Haslanger-sax
Saturday June 3, 2006,
8:00 PM
Trumpeter, vocalist,
percussionist and composer, Pete Rodriguez began his musical career at the age
of 11, studying at the renowned Escuela Libre de Musica in Puerto Rico. This
began the musical path that has led him to three different continents, the Armed
Services, and a singing spot on a Grammy Award winning album. He has performed
on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, for various dignitaries – including Pope John
Paul II and the Prince of Monaco – and has been fortunate to have performed with
numerous legends in the genres of Salsa, jazz and Latin jazz, such as Eddie
Palmieri, Bebo Valdez, Tito Puento, and Celia Cruz.
Pete received his Master of Music in Jazz in 1997. He is now working towards his
Doctorate in Trumpet Performance with an emphasis in jazz at the University of
Texas in Austin.
In recent years, Pete had the honor of singing the songs made famous by his late
father, Salsa Pioneer Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, at the Fania All-Star concerts
at Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. Currently, he is a member of
Bebo Valdez’s Nonet and All-Star Big Band. In addition, Pete performs throughout
central Texas with his jazz quintet, as well as other jazz artists, such as the
Elias Haslanger Quintet and the Paul White Quintet.

Is Proud to Present
Michael
Austin’s Almost Jazz Concert – Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 8:00 PM
With Monte Mann-guitar, Paul Pearcy-percussion,
and Glenn Kawamoto-bass
Mike
Austin’s music is difficult to categorize. Though many think of Mike as fitting
into the folk/singer-songwriter genre, let me make a case for featuring him as
jazz musician.
There's sophistication and humor in his music that is more a kin to the jazz
stereotype than say the pop, folk or country one.
His roots are firmly planted in jazz. He played sax in jazz bands under Woody
Herman’s lead trombonist, Tom Sempf, where he developed his jazz chops.
His style ranges all over, given the lyrics that he writes are all over the
place themselves. But his gospel singing background along with his instrumental
background (sax, flute, clarinet) makes his style a sort of savvy, bluesy mix of
the intellect and the devotional, all rooted firmly in – you guessed it – jazz.
For jazz in general offers more range for a musician like Mike, since it
embraces a high degree of technique on the instruments and a wide range of
source material for the lyric.
In short, Mike’s music, though almost impossible to categorize, is close enough
to jazz to please the jazz aficionados in the audience, while being completely
accessible to lovers of folk, blues, rock, and pop.
Think I exaggerate? Come hear for yourself!
