The Story of the Live Oak Labyrinth

Dedication!

Our labyrinth dedication was on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 11:45 am. There was dancing, music and celebration of the spring equinox and our new labyrinth.

The audio for the labyrinth dedication is  up on the sermons site: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/louuc@sbcglobal.net Look for the file called "20040321_Labyrinth.mp3"

Here are a few more photos of the ceremony. Many thanks to Susan Steffes and her committee for the incredibly wonderful work they did in putting this project together. Future plans include many organized activities for our labyrinth--check here for details! Photos by Mike Schultz, Martha Nethers, and Emily Brandel.

Susan reads words of dedication and welcoming spring.

Committee members raise hands after reciting the invocation.

The eggs await distribution. They symbolize birth and new beginnings, as does the beautiful labyrinth plaque.

An Appleton dance follows, with the entire crowd participating. Brenna P. provides beautiful Celtic fiddle music.

Handing our the eggs, which are filled with crushed stone, so that everyone can symbolically contribute to the building of the labyrinth.

Dancers carry eggs and shake them in time with the music.

Linda W. claps in time as a little one toddles along the path.

Friends of all ages participate.

The longer the dance went on , the more complicated the formation became.

As Susan watches the dance, Stephanie and Erin try to contain their excitement.

"Welcome, Spring," says one of the littlest Live Oakers!

HERE IT IS!

On February 28, we gathered together and constructed the complete labyrinth, using limestone blocks and crushed granite, all from local quarries. It is absolutely beautiful, and the experience was a wonderful example of spirituality combined with good old fashioned hard work. We hope you enjoy this selection of photos of our wonderful work crew and the beautiful finished product! Click on any image to see it enlarged.

The center circle is raked smooth.

The morning work crew gathers for a photo after the blessing of the center.

Bill D. was King of the Bobcat and really moved that gravel around.

Want to read even more about the project? Committee member Mike Schultz created this online journal all about the process!
