Developing Capable Young PeopleLOUU announces the registration for Developing Capable Young People (DCYP). DCYP is a well-known program developed by Dr. H. Stephen Glenn, noted psychologist and author, and by Jane Nelson, Ed.D., former nurse and now educator and author. This class is designed not only for parents, but for educators, mentors, and others who are significant in the lives of young people. It is based on the principles of affirmation, empowerment, and healthy human development, which are also the basis for many of our UU principles. While many “parenting” courses emphasize techniques for manipulating and controlling children in day to day situations, DCYP stresses that no two children are the same, that no relationship remains constant, and that you and the young people you are involved with are unique individuals. Three core values underlie the program – dignity, respect, and tolerance for diversity. Esther Ford, M.Ed., LPC, who is a certified leader for this program, will be facilitating the program. She has facilitated this class numerous times (three of them at Live Oak over the past 10 years). It is an 8-week, once-a-week program and will probably be held on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, depending on the needs of the participants. The class will be limited to 12 participants, so if this is a class you are interested in, please respond AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! The program is free, but participants will need to purchase two books and a workbook for $35 ($45 for couples who share the two books). It is recommended that both persons in two-parent families take the class if at all possible, so childcare is in the process of being organized. Please call Mary McIntosh, Adult RE Coordinator (mcmcintosh@earthlink.net, 350-1118) to indicate an interest. |
