Here is what we were reading in 1997-98

December 1998

To celebrate the holiday season, Alice Sessions has invited the group to her house for cookie exchange. We will meet Thursday, Dec.17 at 7:30 PM at Alice's house. Please bring 3 or 4 dozen cookies to swap if you'd like to attend. In January, we will resume our book discussion by chatting about Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. Recommended by Carrie Stewart, the book chronicles the life of an ordinary family living in extraordinary times. Join us for the discussion on January 21 at 7:30 in the church sanctuary

October 1998

Thanks to Jennifer Swan for again pitching-in and leading the group in Sept. In October, we will be discussing Rebecca Wells's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. This book is a rollicking good read - a classic Southern tale with a lot of laughs. The story is primarily about the complex bonds between mother and daughter.

We will meet Thursday, Oct 15 at 7:30 PM in the church sanctuary. All are welcome.

September 1998

The Live UU book group will meet Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 in the church sanctuary. We will be discussing Road from Coorain by Jill Ker Conway. The book was suggested by Jan Nesheim who will be leading the discussion. All are welcome to join us.

August 1998

The book group will not meet in August. In September, we will meet Thursday, Sept.17 at 7:30 in the Church sanctuary. We selected a non- fiction autobiographical account for our first meeting in the fall. We will discuss the Road from Coorain by Jill Ker Conway, former president of Smith College. Conway's autobiographical tale of her childhood in Australia draws the reader in from the first sentence. This is a book you may just remember the rest of your life. Wendy Clark.

June 1998

Hill Towns by Anne Rivers Siddons is the book group's selection for the June 18th meeting. Book Preview: As a small child, Cat Gaillard experienced a single event that changed her life--and rendered her unable to leave her mountaintop college town. Her devotion to her family and her desire to put the incident behind her propel Cat on a life-changing voyage to Italy. We will meet at 7:30 PM in the church sanctuary--all are welcome.

January 1998

The Liar's Club by Mary Karr is the January selection for the Live Oak Book Group. The title of the book is taken from Karr's father's drinking "club". The club was made up of men her father hung out with in the back room of the American Legion Hall, playing dominoes, swilling beer, and telling tall tales. Karr's father, she remembers, told the best stories of all: stories that haunt her for the rest of her life. The book is available at Borders in the poetry section and at Barnes and Noble in the Memoir section (just before the fiction works). We will meet on Thursday, January 15 at 7:30 PM. in the church sanctuary. Our intent is to make the third Thursday at 7:30 our regular meeting day and time. All are welcome.

December 1997

We met in November to discuss Cold Mountain and had a fine time! For December, we thought it would be fun to do a paperback exchange and talk about a new book that's by a local writer for the Austin Chronicle. For the exchange, just bring a couple of paperbacks that you've read and we'll share them with the group. Anything is fine to bring, and you certainly don't need to wrap them. It's a chance to clean out your bookshelves, then fill 'em up again - for free!

If you like, bring some holiday cookies to share. If you're really ambitious, bring a dozen and we'll do a cookie exchange, too! Bring a dozen and take home a dozen.

The book we will be talking about is a new paperback murder mystery by Margaret Moseley entitled Bonita Faye. It's funny in the style of Joan Hess and is set in Poteau, Oklahoma. The story centers around Bonita Faye's liberation from mean, low-down Billy Roy Burnett. I found the book for $4.99 at a local book store. We will meet Monday, Dec. 8, at 7:15 in the church. We hope to come up with a regular meeting night that fits folks' schedules. Looking forward to seeing you there...
