Book Group Information From 2006

December 2006

The next meeting of the Live Oak Bookworms will be Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7:15 pm at the home of Melissa Martinez. We will read The Ice Queen, a novel by Alice Hoffman, recommended by Eleanor. We are hoping for a good turn-out. Contact Melissa melsmartinez@gmail.com for directions.

If you like to plan ahead, for January we will read Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris. This small but thought provoking book needs to be read and discussed, especially by church groups.

There is a copy being passed around, but it also is available in multiple copies from the Austin library, as is The Ice Queen.

November 2006

This is official: After much debate that did not result in any form of consensus we will have the next book group meeting on Tuesday, Nov.14, at 7:15 pm at Hella Holoubek's house. Call 918-3276 for directions.  Our text is John Updike's Rabbit, Run. We will also need suggestions for books to read during the next few months. All are welcome. Looking forward to seeing you.

October 2006

The Live Oak Book Group will meet on Tuesday, October 10 at 7:15 pm at the house of Joyce Phelps. We are going to talk about The Known World by Edward P. Jones. Everybody is welcome. Call Joyce for directions, 733-0561.

September 2006

Our next meeting will be September 12, 2006, at 7:15 pm at the house of Hella Holoubek. Call 918-3276 for directions. We have chosen Joan Didion's The Year Of Magical Thinking. Try to get the book early because the Austin library does not have many copies. Everyone is welcome at the meeting. we always like to get new people.

For those who like to read ahead, our text for October is The Known World by Edward P. Jones; and for November we have selected Rabbit, Run by John Updike. Happy reading.

June 2006

Our next meeting will be June 13, 7:15 pm at the house of Joyce Phelps.

Our text will be Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It is a story of survival and faith, brilliantly told and reminding us of The Old Man and the Sea. Everyone is welcome. Call Joyce for directions: 733-0561.

If you want to read ahead, in July we will talk about Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. And for August we have selected a book by the daughter of our own Esther and Jim Ford, Jennifer Ziegler. The title is Alpha Dog.

May 2006

Our next meeting will be May 9, 7:15 pm at the house of Joyce Phelps. We will discuss The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Lewis is a well known writer of religious essays and the children's series The Chronicles of Narnia.

April 2006

Our next meeting will be Tuesday April 11, 7:15 PM at the house of Eleanor Spink. We will discuss The Color Of Water by James McBride. Eleanor will post directions, or call her at 512-868-1402. All are welcome.

To plan ahead, for May we have selected a classic: Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe. Both books are available at the Austin Library.

March 2006

The Live Oak Bookworms will meet March 14, 2006, at 7:15 pm at the house of Hella Holoubek. Our selection is Praying For Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene, a piece of non-fiction dealing with government, corruption, and race relations. Everyone welcome. Call Hella at 918-3276 for directions.

February 2006

The Live Oak bookworms will meet Feb. 14 at 7:15 at the house of Melissa Martinez. Our text is Ghost Country by Sara Paretsky. The book is available in multiple copies from the Austin library. We hope to see many of you. Call Melissa at 716-0188 for directions.

January 2006

The book group will meet January 10 at 7:15 pm at the house of John Alligood. Our selection is Before Women Had Wings by Connie May Fowler. Call John (249-0313) if you need directions. If you want to read ahead, in February we will discuss Ghost Country by Sara Paretsky. Both books are available from the Austin Public Library. Everyone is welcome!
