Book Group News 2002December 2002The
Live Oak Book Group will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7:15 at the home of Tara de
Cardenas, 8725 Sea Ash Circle in Round Rock. Our selection of the month is Toni
Morrison's BELOVED. November 2002
The November meeting of the Live Oak book group will be on MONDAY, Nov.
11 at 7:15 in the home of Tara de Cardenas, 8725 Sea Ash Crl, Round Rock. Please
note the change of day from our usual Tuesday. The selection of the month is NICKEL
AND DIMED by Barbara Ehrenreich. This is a discussion of poverty in
America and should be required reading for any liberal.

Looking ahead to December, we have chosen to read BELOVED
by Tony Morrison. October 2002The
Live Oak book group will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:15pm at the house of Tara
de Cardenas, 8725 Sea Ash Circle, Round Rock. We will discuss Rudolfo Anaya's BLESS
ME, ULTIMA. This book was chosen as the one book all of Austin should read
this summer. Therefore, our group decided we would be part of it. Newsweek
called the author "the poet of the barrio...the most widely read
Mexican-American". We
would love a good turn-out. Call Tara for directions at 238-8179. Planning
ahead, for November we will read Barbara Ehrenreich's NICKELED AND DIMED. It is
a report on how not to get by in America by those working for minimum
wages. September 2002For September 10 we are
planning to discuss Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of
Science, Faith, and Love by Dava
Sobel, based on a
correspondence of Galileo and his daughter, who was a nun. We will be
meeting at the home of Joyce Phelps at 7:15pm. Please contact Joyce for

Our
book group has decided on the books for the next four months. They look like a
good bunch to me. We are inviting all book lovers who may work different
schedules during the summer to come and join our discussions whenever it is
possible. We hope to see some new faces for our meetings. The
book for June is Paula, by Isabel Allende. In it the author is trying to
communicate with her comatose daughter by telling her the story of her family.
We will meet June 11 at 7:15 pm at Hella's house, 10421 Mourning Dove Dr. Call
918-3276 for directions. Looking
ahead, so that you can plan your summer reading, on July 9 we will talk about Crossing
to Safety, by Wallace Stegner. This book describes the life-long
relationship of two couples. We did another book by this author last year and
all enjoyed it. Leslie Cunningham is hosting our group that evening at 11310
Spicewood Club Drive, Unit 2. Call Leslie at 331-8461 if you need directions. Our
text for August 13 is Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund. This book is
written from the viewpoint of the wife of the protagonist of Moby Dick. For September 10 we are
planning Galileo’s Daughter, a book of science and history based on a

April 2002The UU book group will meet on Tuesday, April 2 at the home of Joyce Phelps, 2630 Henley Drive, Round Rock. We will be discussing Armistead Maupin's TALES OF THE CITY. We meet at 7:15 pm with the discussion to start at 7:30. Call Joyce at 733-0561 for directions. Looking ahead, our selection for May is THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING by Tracy Chevalier. We always have stimulating discussions and welcome anyone interested in good books! March 2002The UU book group will meet on Tuesday, March 5 at the home of Tara de

Kingsolver's PRODIGAL SUMMER. We meet at 7:15 pm with the discussion to

Armistead Maupin. We would love another big turn out, and we always have

Come and join us for some interesting discussions! January 2002The January meeting of the Live Oak UU Book Group will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, 7:15 pm at the home of Tere Kaulfus, 10602 Cranford Ct. Call her at 336-5544 for directions or more info. We have changed the weekday in the hope of attracting more members, and the date was moved back to give people a little more time to get through our selection, Middlemarch by George Eliot. This is a very involved story of persons in rural England of 1830. Virginia Woolf called this book "maybe the only 19th century English novel written for adults".
