Please note the change of day from our usual Tuesday. The selection of the month is NICKEL AND DIMED by Barbara Ehrenreich. The Live Oak book group will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:15pm at the house of Tara de Cardenas, 8725 Sea Ash Circle, Round Rock. We will discuss Rudolfo Anaya's BLESS ME, ULTIMA. This book was chosen as the one book all of Austin should read this summer. Therefore, our group decided we would be part of it. Newsweek called the author "the poet of the barrio...the most widely read Mexican-American".

We would love a good turn-out. Call Tara for directions at 238-8179.

June 2002

Our book group has decided on the books for the next four months. They look like a good bunch to me. We are inviting all book lovers who may work different schedules during the summer to come and join our discussions whenever it is possible. We hope to see some new faces for our meetings.

The book for June is Paula, by Isabel Allende. In it the author is trying to communicate with her comatose daughter by telling her the story of her family. We will meet June 11 at 7:15 pm at Hella's house, 10421 Mourning Dove Dr. Call 918-3276 for directions.

Looking ahead, so that you can plan your summer reading, on July 9 we will talk about Crossing to Safety, by Wallace Stegner. This book describes the life-long relationship of two couples. We did another book by this author last year and all enjoyed it. Leslie Cunningham is hosting our group that evening at 11310 Spicewood Club Drive, Unit 2. Call Leslie at 331-8461 if you need directions.

Our text for August 13 is Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund. This book is written from the viewpoint of the wife of the protagonist of Moby Dick.

For September 10 we are planning Galileo’s Daughter, a book of science and history based on a correspondence of Galileo and his daughter, who was a nun.
